LANDSLEG x Rannís

Three shelters around Iceland
Wood, waterproof tarp, stones and turf
May - September 2025
Iceland

The project is based on researching the connection of the human body to the land through lived experience in an artwork. Taking inspiration from U.K. Le Guin theories and G. Johannesdottir embodied knowledge’s theories, these installations around Iceland draws inspiration from the word “landsleg”. “Landsleg” is the ancient Icelandic word for landscape. “Leg” also refers to the mother’s womb, and a resting place, “legstaður”. Moreover Ursula Le Guin states in “the carrier bag theory of fiction”, that it is likely that the first shape humans created were not swords, but bowls to carry what is important or necessary for survival. Instead of cutting the sky and going up, this installation is sinking into the ground like a crater, a big bowl for bodies. This womb made out of moss and other plants, welcomes people to get in, to get closer to the ground and melt in the landscape. It is a matter of both establishing a connection with our own body through an effective action, and to connect with the land.

The first three shelters of the project are located in Laugarnes (Reykjavik), Skriðuklaustur (East Iceland) and Islenski Bærinn, Selfoss (South Iceland). They were possible thanks to Rannis Student Innovation Fund, Skriðuklaustur residency and Skotta Valgarðsdóttir, Listaháskóli Island,  Aðalheiður Guðmundsdóttir,  Islenski Bærinn and Hannes Larusson, Steinþór Hannes Gissurarson, Oddur Guðmundsson, Ólöf Nordal, Torf.is, Helgi Bragason,  Jeremias Rumpl, Sarah Moore, Þorbjörg Jónsdóttir, Lene Zachariassen and Riccardo Vailati
